At Total Learning Academy, our responsibility extends beyond the mere transmission of knowledge and skills within specialized content areas. In addition to the academic objectives that we support our students to achieve in the classroom, we also encourage them to learn about the greater world around them, along with their own place and role in this world. We encourage our students to accomplish this task experientially, so that they can learn by doing and reflecting in addition to the normal practice of studying. Above all, we want students to explore the interconnectedness between themselves and those around them, and this includes those within and outside of the Total community. It is our belief that through greater investigation into the many ways lives are lived and experienced, a sense of responsibility and curiosity is naturally borne out. It is in this way that we study how we are similar and how we are different, and examine the finite resources that we must share and use wisely. We extend the pupil’s responsibility from learning how to be a good student in the classroom, into learning how to be a good member of the overall community and a good citizen to the world. And we make this part and parcel of our curriculum, of our student learning objectives, and of our overall school mission.
